Overview: The Danakil Depression is located in the Afar region in northeastern Ethiopia, where close to the border of Eritrea and Djibouti and also known as Afar Triangle. It’s considered as one of the hottest, driest and the most inhospitable place in the world. It is also the lowest regions on face of earth (125 meters below sea level). One of the most geologically active regions with three tectonic plates meeting at the Afar Triple Junction. When tectonic plates move apart like at Danakil, it creates lave lakes, hot springs, geysers and fissures in the ground. On the other hand, the visit of the process of Salt mining, packing salt bar on the back of camel and transporting to Tigray highland in a long line of camel caravan will make your stay memorable.
Day 1: Fly from Addis Ababa to Samara
Take morning flight to fly to Samara and meet with drive and cook at the airport. After quick refresh in the town start drive to Erta Ale via Aba Ala and to Kusrewad where to arrange camels, local Militia and Road guide to the Erta Ale Mountain. After arranging the local staff drives to the foothill where we park our car and our cook make a camping for cooking. When the sun is set start trekking to the summit. After 3o minutes trekking you reach to the summit where you enjoy the active volcano. After visit volcano walkdown to the camp site and have your dinner. Overnight Erta Ale
Day 2: Erta Ale – Aba Ala- Hamed Ela
Early in the morning about 05:00 AM local time trek to volcano to have morning exposure and after visiting retrace back to the camping site have Your breakfast and then drive to Hamed Ela via Aba Ala. Late afternoon enjoying the sunset at lake Asale. After visit drive back to the camp for overnight. Overnight at Hamed Ela camping
Day 3: Excursion to Dallol and then drive Mekele
Early in morning excursion to Dallol Sulphur spring forming different color formation and fascinating salt mountain accompanying with defense military and then continues drive to salt mining (salt bars) and packing on camel to take to Tigrian highland and then transported to Addis Ababa.
Drive to Afdera Salt Lake and the their have your launch camp there. Afternoon you will have a visit and admire the traditional salt mining using very simple technic around your camp site. The rest relaxing and swimming in Afdera lake where you are camping. Overnight at Afdera Lake
Day 4: Drive to Samara and fly back to Addis Ababa
Morning depending on your flight schedule leave Afdera to samara and the take flight to fly back to Addis Ababa.
